Work in antimatter

The field is hiring.

Antimatter is moving from a handful of experiments into industry. Here is who is building, and what the work needs.

Companies

Commercial antimatter work is new. Listings come from each company's own careers page and link straight to it.

Antimatter, Inc.

Building America's commercial antimatter capability: generation, containment and applications, with a lab in Arizona. Hiring a small interdisciplinary team, and open to applications from exceptional scientists and engineers.

What the work needs

Antimatter is an interdisciplinary problem. These are the skills every trap depends on.

Accelerator physics
Making antiprotons, and slowing them by a factor of ten billion in energy.
Non-neutral plasma physics
Holding large clouds of a single charge without losing them to the walls.
Extreme-high vacuum
One stray gas molecule ends an antiproton. Traps run below what gauges can read.
Cryogenics
Traps sit at four kelvin and below, which also pumps the last gas away.
Superconducting magnets
Penning traps and antihydrogen traps both depend on strong, stable fields.
Precision high voltage
Electrode potentials shape the trap; noise on them heats what it holds.
Detectors and nuclear measurement
Annihilations are the signal. Seeing them precisely is half of every experiment.
Monte Carlo and scientific computing
Radiation transport, trap dynamics and design studies run in simulation first.

Research groups

The active experiments train most of the people who have ever handled antimatter. Their collaborations take students, fellows and engineers.

CERN's own openings, including fellowships and student programmes, are listed at careers.cern.
